Celebrated couturiers, Shyamal and Bhumika unveiled their latest Couture Muse of Mirrors at the India Couture Week 2018. For handloom lover like me, who wishes to see handloom gets it due place on global couture world map, it was a visual delight. Shyamal & Bhumika remain faithful to their vision of ‘India to the World’ using fashion as a medium to connect global audiences through the rich and glorious crafts and artisan techniques of India. Muse of Mirrors was a collection featuring the designer duo’s signature avant-garde and exquisite embroideries and details. Shyamal & Bhumika’s couture collection, celebrates their princess muse, using tiers of eco-friendly handloom fabrics like matka silks, raw silks, and intricately paired with fine crepes, and georgettes; with diaphanous tulle and organza to dress her for flamboyant operas and picturesque weddings.
Shyamal and Bhumika seek inspiration from the rich Indian heritage & history from the ancient culture and use its precious crafts and artisan techniques to create couture collections relevant to the modern day sensibilities. For the couture they used age-old techniques of aari, zardozi and pitta entwine into elaborate drapes and structured sleeves with tumbling vines, floating bouquet, delicate petals and vintage crests adding richness to delicate fabrics. Vintage rose gold zari threads and silk threads are intricately embroidered into exaggerated floral and scalloped hems, over layered with sequins, giving a painterly effect and softness to the romance-inspired collection that makes costume couture relevant to their young muse. It was pleasing to see that ‘churidars’ are back in couture through their collection.
M.S.Dhoni movie fame Kiara Advani walked the ramp as showstopper for them. A mélange of unique vintage colors of English rose pink, ochre, moon grey, dusty mint, muted ivory, champagne complimented with vivid shades of midnight blue, emerald green and crimson reds create a sight to behold. The collection Muse of Mirrors was inspired by the regality and romance of ancient palaces, with their ornate archways, painted ceilings, silk upholstery and baroque carpets. Dreams fashioned by the royals; envisaged by Shyamal & Bhumika for their muse who loves to paint while exotic rubies dangle from her charmed wrist- a woman that embodies the complexities of contemporary Indian romanticism.
The show was sponsored by by RK Jewellers South Ex II.
